Book 19: Avalon High by Meg Cabot – 280 pages

Description from bookdepository.co.uk:

Avalon High, I was starting to think, might not be so bad after all. Maybe it's not where Ellie wants to be, but if you have to start at a new school, Avalon High is typical enough: There's Lance, the jock. Jennifer, the cheerleader. And Will, senior class president, quarterback, and all-around good guy. But not everyone at Avalon High is who they appear to be . . . not even, as Ellie is about to discover, herself. As a bizarre drama begins to unfold, Ellie has to wonder, what part does she play in all this? Do the coincidences she's piecing together really mean--as in King Arthur's court--that tragedy is fast approaching for her new friends? Ellie doesn't know if she can do anything to stop the coming trouble. But somehow, she knows she has to try.

Thoughts:

I used to read Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries books, among many others, so I have this weird collection of her books. This was one of the few young adult ones I had left that I hadn’t read yet. I decided at the end of 2016 that I would try and power through a stack of young adult romance books, and this one was the last I hit before I finally gave up, unable to take anymore of sickly sweet mess of such stories. Anyway, this book, one of Meg Cabot’s few stand-alones, tells the story of a high school girl whose life starts to take on a resemblance to the ancient story of Avalon (and she goes to a school called Avalon High – it’s like its destiny or something!). Is she just crazy, or is something mystical really happening, and should she do something about it? And so it goes, with a little plot twist at the end as to who Ellie, the girl in question, actually appears to be playing in this real life version of the myth. It’s a perfectly fine story, much more suitable to its demographic (not an almost 30 year old, but oh well!), and very typical Meg Cabot. Certainly not a stand out story (I think they made a movie or a TV movie of it, actually), but a perfectly fine way to spend a week of my reading life.
